Becoming a new mother is an exciting adventure, but it can also be overwhelming, especially when it comes to breastfeeding. Although every experience is unique, here are five lessons I wish I had known before starting my breastfeeding journey:
- Breastfeeding is Mutual Learning
Before my baby was born, I thought breastfeeding would be natural and instinctive. However, both the baby and I were learning to breastfeed together. I learned that there is no "right" way to do it and that patience and practice are key. Seeking support from a lactation consultant or support group can make a big difference in breastfeeding confidence and success.

- Preparation and advice is important
Breastfeeding is not just about putting the baby on the breast. Learning about proper positioning, how to make sure baby is getting enough milk, and how to avoid problems like cracked nipples is essential. Good prior knowledge can help avoid unnecessary frustrations and problems. Don't hesitate to seek support from breastfeeding experts, a lactation consultant or support groups can be a lifesaver.

- Self-care is essential
Breastfeeding can be exhausting, both physically and emotionally. Before embarking on this journey, I wish I knew how important it is to take care of myself. Getting enough rest, staying hydrated, and eating well not only benefits my well-being, but also the quality of my breast milk.
- Communication with Baby is Key
Learning to read my baby's cues was one of the most valuable parts of my breastfeeding experience. Babies communicate hunger, contentment, and tiredness in different ways. Paying attention to her cues helped me establish a pattern and breastfeed at her pace.

- There is no place for blame
At first, I blamed myself when I faced breastfeeding challenges. I realized that it is normal to have ups and downs and that asking for help does not mean failure. Breastfeeding is not always perfect and it is okay to make decisions based on what is best for me and my baby.
Looking back, breastfeeding gave me moments of deep connection and joy, but it also had its challenges. Learning these lessons would have allowed me to face those challenges with greater confidence and calm. If you are a new mom preparing to breastfeed, remember that every step in this journey is valuable and that you are doing what is best for you and your baby. Remember that you are not less of a mom if you give formula or a better mom if you give breast milk, it is something between you and your baby, you will decide how and until when.
